my name is angie, and i'm ambitious. i heard the phrase, "dress for the job you want, not the job you have," and i had a thought; why don't i LIVE that way? i have dreams and goals and ambitions. before, these things were a "someday" thought. well, someday is today. i'm gunna make it happen.
Months ago, my friend Amber invited me to a cultural festival at Miami University in Oxford, Ohio. She said it involved Tibetan Buddhist monks chanting and dancing. I'm totally into that kind of thing, so I said SURE!
note: taking photos was off-limits. These photos came from this site - but this is exactly the same as what we saw tonight.
The monks shared little pieces of their Tibetan culture with us- a culture that is disappearing fast, due to communist China moving in and taking over. So when you see the phrase, "Free Tibet," it means free them from oppressive Chinese rule. They want to be their own country and govern themselves, but China has other plans. And just FYI, I totally adore China, too. But I think it's sad what's happening to the Tibetans.
Today was the first time I used chopsticks in public.
A few days ago, I mentioned that I had learned how to use chopsticks. Since that day, I've been using them to eat scrambled eggs every morning, and at night I practice by repeatedly picking up and dropping a piece of gum. (Hey, it works!) But today was the first time I really put it to the test. I went out to a Viet Namese restaurant with a friend of mine, and I ate the ENTIRE MEAL without a fork! Chopsticks only! GO ME! :D hehehe
Broccoli, peas, carrots, onions, tofu, calliflower, with spices and lemongrass. Mmmm.. <3
I'm so proud of myself.. ^ ^ And it's totally cool how I would several mention people I know, and it turns out my friend knew them too! Small world, for real. And I'm totally excited to find out that my friend listens to Korean pop music too. We were talking about different groups and music videos and all that- finally, I have someone to share my dorky obsession with! XD
When I start something new, I like to have a clean slate. It gets me pumped for the journey ahead- especially when I know that journey won't always be easy. Like when I want to start running regularly, I go buy a new pair of running shoes, or when I start a big painting project, I might buy a nice new paintbrush. Lately, I've been interested in South Korean culture, since I discovered a new love obsession for Korean pop music. I saw an ad for free online Korean language classes being offered here. Since they're free, I thought, hey, why not?? And I signed up. I know myself though, and I have a tendency to slack off, so to make it more fun, I went to Target and bought a new notebook *pure joy!!* and new pens, in awesome colors! *eee!*
The notebook is totally awesome. It's eco-friendly (recycled paper and banana fibers) and the pages have that cool unbleached feel, with little flecks on the natural fibers. I love it. The front and back covers have a pocket for all my print-outs. And at the top of every page, it has a little calender thing where you circle the month and the day. And did I mention the green OWL?! Love.
This is my favorite phrase. It's pronounced "sa-raung heyo" and it means I LOVE YOU. Pretty awesome, right? I wish I could be this motivated for actual school...
Today while laying out back and listening to Super Juniors's song, "Sorry Sorry," on my iPod, I noticed there were Korean characters in parentheses in the song title. I tried my hand at diciphering them.
"Sssss...aaah..r..eee.. .. .. ss-ah-r-eee.. .. sareee.. .. !! OH! SORRY SORRY!! I CAN READ KOREAN!" And I laughed hysterically and danced around my backyard in my bikini.
This is the video for the aforementioned song. :] Its pretty freakin awesome. For realz. Watch it.
And the have a version of the video that's just the dance. I am 100% going to do this with my bridal party at my wedding reception one day.. You know, instead of the Thriller Dance. <3
you couldn't tell my looking at me, but i'm really into korean pop music.. *ahem* specifically the group shinhwa and the singer minwoo. *i know it's dorky, but i just don't care!* well, today is minwoo's bithday! =D i feel like a 12 year old, having a crush on a celebrity, and kinda weird that my crush doesn't speak english.. but seriously, look at him. *drools*
all pics from google images
happy birthday minwoo! :]
watch one of my fave videos. its really a beautiful song. give it a chance!
i got an email today from megan of Mutual Of Omaha. She invited me to take part in the "Aha Moments" campaign, on behalf of my online business, angie may handmade. which to me, is pretty exciting!! i set up an appointment for tuesday evening to be interviewed on camera for the campaign. i *REALLY* hope my cheeks have quit being swollen by then... darn wisdom teeth!
in other news, im ALMOST done with my portrait for melissa at the blog melissastuff. i just have to finish up this guy's little hand and ear. what do you think?
and i got this cd in the mail yesterday. i LOVE it! its called "explore" from the artist "M" or Minwoo. you know, the korean popstar that i'm kind of totally in love with?? mmm.. and dont mind the fact that i have no makup i this picture.. ive been hanging around my house in my jammies the past few days with a swollen face, i dont think makup would do a whole lot for me at this point. speaking of which, here's a really really unflattering picture of me with my swollen cheeks. pity party anyone? lol jk.
i'll be hanging out with my oldest niece and youngest nephew tomorrow! which is a great thing, except i look like a monster and i can hardly talk or smile. lol we will see what happens.. ooh and i finished up all my shopping for melissa at oh my darling! i was paired up with her for the color me happy project at Adventures in Love and Happiness. here's a little hint at one of the items! ;) you'll never guess!
check it out, everyone! i'm on A Beautiful Mess!! My faaavorite blog! i came across elsie's blog 2 or 3 years ago. i work at hobby lobby, and our store sold her "love, elsie" brand scrapbooking products. i fell in love with them, so i googled "love, elsie." and found A Beautiful Mess! i've been reading religiously ever since. <3
elsie is such an inspiration to me. really.
i made these nifty little buttons, so you too can share a link with the world! ;) hehe. copy and paste the code from the left sidebar to your blog. pretty please! :D
and in case you want to know, this is how my day went:
if you recall, i set up a both at the Street Fair in Yellow Springs, OH a few weeks ago. the booths on either side of me were selling Thai merchandise. I thought this was cool because i'm really interested in asian cultures, if you couldn't tell.. anyway, one lady gave a business card, and i emailed her a few times, talking about her shop that she's opening in New Carlisle, OH. well my bff, amber, invited me to go shopping with her today, then mentioned that she would like to check out the store, the Siam Orchid, and i was like, "heck yeah! let's go!" :D the store is even cuter than i had imagined! they have really cool authentic Thai merchandise at greeeat prices. unfortunately, they weren't open yet, (grand opening july 3rd) but the owners were there and let us in to look around and chit-chat. i didn't take any photos, because i thought it would be a little weird of me.. maybe next time?
on my shopping list for next visit:
painted mango wood bangle bracelets (its super hard to find bangles that arent too big, and these fit just right!)
im working on this custom drawing for Melissa at melissastuff.blogspot.com . i started it like 3 weeks ago.. i really can't wait to finish it though, and i know melissa can't wait either! *sorry to make you wait, melissa!!*
and here are a few random pics from my day.
proving my hypothesis that i fall in love entirely too easy, i would like to introduce Minwoo! i saw a picture of him on weheartit and my heart screamed a little. like, a lot, actually.
"please God, send me this one. and then make sure i don't screw things up. Amen."
